This website is a part of a professional development project by teachers at Woodland Elementary called Problem Based Learning in Inquiry. We received a STEM Grant from a Project called Teachers in Action which is an initiative of the Faculty of Education, Memorial University and is funded from a donation by Hibernia Management and Development Company Ltd. (HMDC).
About us
Melanie Pinsent graduated from Memorial University in 2003 with a B. Ed. (Prim/Elem) with a concentration in Science. She completed her teaching internship at Memorial's campus in Harlow, England, and has had a love of travel ever since. Mrs. Pinsent went on to receive a B. Sp. Ed. from Memorial in 2006 and an M.Ed in 2013. Mrs. Pinsent spent four years as a Special Education teacher before transferring to Woodland Elementary for a Primary Classroom position in 2008. This is her fourth year teaching Grade 3, and her second time completing a STEM project with TIA at Memorial University. Mrs. Pinsent is also in her second year of growing a classroom garden through Agriculture in The Classroom's Little Green Thumbs program. She loves to Plant, Grow, Eat, and Share. Gerald McCarthy graduated from MUN with a B. Ed. (Prim/Elem), B. Sp. Ed. and a M. Ed (Admin). Gerald has been teaching for about 18 years and have been at Woodland Elementary for the last 12 years. He is currently teaching grade 4 and has taught from grades 3 to 9. Gerald has done 5 Action Research/TIA Projects: Concept Mapping in Science, MapQuest for Magnetism, Problem Solving Process in Math, Flipping the Math Class and Problem Based Learning in Science. Gerald's favourite subjects are math and science. Rod Rideout Rod started his teaching career at Topsail Elementary School in 1989. He has also taught at Bayview All Grade, James Cook Memorial, Bishop White All Grade and Clarenville Middle School. He has been a staff member of Woodland Elementary for the past ten years. He continued his educational studies from MUN and received a Diploma in School Resources Services in 1994 and a Masters Of Education in 2005. Rod has taught in grades 3 to 9 and his favorite subjects are Math and Science. His hobbies include hockey and camping. This is his first year involved with TIA. |
About our school
We teach at Woodland Elementary in the community of Dildo, Newfoundland and Labrador. Located in scenic Trinity Bay, we are a small school with about 180 students from Kindergarten to Grade 6. |
